The matric ball goes by quickly. Months of planning the outfit, the hair and the car lead to a few hours that are over before you know it. A planned photo shoot before the event means you keep more than a few rushed phone pictures. Here is how to get it right.
Book early
Matric ball season is concentrated into a few weeks, and many schools in the same area hold their events on the same weekends. Good photographers are booked well ahead. Once you know your date, secure your photographer.
Leave more time than you think you need
Hair and make-up almost always run late. Plan to be fully dressed at least an hour and a half before you need to leave. That gives time for relaxed portraits, photos with family and a few shots with the car, without anyone watching the clock.
Choose your location on purpose
Home is convenient and meaningful, especially for photos with grandparents and siblings. If your garden or driveway is small, pick a second spot nearby, such as a park or a building with clean walls and good light. Tell your photographer in advance so they can plan the route.
Make the car part of the story
If you have arranged a special car, schedule photos with it before you leave, while it is clean and the light is still good. Personalised plates, the arrival and the moment you step out all make strong pictures.
Do the family photos first
Parents and grandparents are often the people who treasure these photos most. Get the family groups done at the start, then move on to individual portraits and photos with your partner and friends.
Bring the small things
Pack a touch-up kit, safety pins, comfortable shoes for walking between spots and a bottle of water. Small problems are easy to fix when you are prepared.
